Hopper 4.0
Hopper Overview
Hopper
4.0 can be used to help determine the best course of action when
dealing with grasshopper outbreaks on rangeland. Managers can use
hopper to estimate public, private, or total benefits versus costs
for either public, private, or cooperative rangeland grasshopper
control projects. Clearly, the decision to control or not control
rangeland grasshoppers is not simple. The suggestions and guidelines
in hopper will help managers avoid blunders, mistakes, and errors-and
will help support rational pest management on public and private
rangelands. Users should compare recommended treatments with other
options developed since the program was written, such as
RAATs
and Dimilin. Not all treatment options listed in Hopper are currently
registered for use on rangeland. Although Hopper 4.0 is a DOS
based program, it has been modified by
USDA-APHIS-PPQ-CPHST
to easily install and run on all
Windows 2000 and XP machines.

However, the rangeland ecosystem is very complex and unpredictable.
In addition, HOPPER does not have any control over the data entered
by each user. Therefore, the results derived from HOPPER CANNOT

Notice
Hopper still lists Acephate as an option. However,
Acephate is no longer registered for use on rangeland. Please ignore
any recommendations Hopper may make for Acephate. Hopper does not
list Dimilin 2L as an option. As of 2001, Dimilin is registered
for use on rangeland. Hopper does not incorporate the use of Reduced
Agent Area Treatments that reduce application rates, costs, and
environmental concerns, while maintaining effectiveness (see
RAATs
Brochure).
