EVALUATION OF TRANSGENIC SUGARBEETS IN THE MONDAK REGION          Sidney, mt

Transgenic sugarbeets are sugarbeets that have been genetically altered through the use of recombinant DNA. Two types of transgenic beets have been tested at the MSU Eastern Ag Research Center since 1997, Liberty-Link (LL) which confers resistance to the general herbicide Liberty, and Roundup-Ready (RR), which confers resistance to the herbicide Roundup.

Residual soil N to 4 ft: 26.5 lb/ac

Residual soil P to 6 in:  19 ppm

Residual soil K to 6 in: 311  ppm

Applied fertilizer: 400 lb 18-46-0 + 20 lbs  N /A applied as 28-0-0 liquid N on 13 Sept 1999

Planted:  April 28; three-row plots, 180 seed/row, rows 30 ft long with 24 in between rows.

Herbicide applications:     Liberty, 2.5 pt/ac, applied 26 May -  Roundup 1.5 pt/ac, applied May 26

Trimmed and thinned: June 6

Harvested:  September 7

Growing season precip: 9.65 inches

Furrow-flood irrigated: June26, July 14, July 25, August 7, and August 21
