2005 MALT barley seeding rate STUDY, Sidney, MT

                                        J.L.A. Eckhoff1

Four seeding rates were tested using two malt barley varieties grown under dryland fallow, sprinkler irrigated and flood irrigated conditions. Seeding rates were based on number of pure live seed planted per acre.  Sprinkler irrigated plots were irrigated on May 4 and June 20. Flood irrigated plots were irrigated on June 11.  Under dryland condition in 2005, higher seeding rate resulted in earlier bloom and lower protein. Under sprinkler irrigation, higher seeding rate resulted in earlier bloom, greater lodging, and lower percent plump seed. Under flood irrigation, higher seeding rate resulted in lower percent plump seed and lower test weight.

When analyzed across four years, higher seeding rate on dryland fallow conditions resulted in earlier bloom and higher yield, with the highest yield achieved with a seeding rate of 1,250,000 pure live seed/acre. Percent plump seed and test weight were not affected by seeding rate.  Grain protein was slightly reduced but not significantly so. Under sprinkler irrigation, higher seeding rates resulted in earlier bloom, greater lodging, reduced percent plump seed and higher yield, with highest yield achieved with a seeding rate of 1,500,000 seed/acre. Under flood irrigation, higher seeding rate resulted in earlier bloom, greater lodging, reduced percent plump seed and greater yield. Highest yield was achieved with a seeding rate of 1,500,000 seed/acre.
