Durum Response to Nitrogen

Irrigated: Preplant N was applied on May 1, 1997 and immediately incorporated. Residual soil N to four feet was 70 lb/acre. 'Ben' durum was jointing. Harvest date was august 11th. Application of N increased yield, with greatest yield achieved at 90 lb applied N. Nitrogen rate affected yield more than time of application. Splitting the application of N increased grain protein.

Dryland: Preplant N was applied on April 16th. 'Munich' durum was planted 18 April. Residual soil N to 3 FT was 112 lb/acre. Nitrogen was broadcast on half of the plots on June 4th, when the durum was jointing. Plots were harvested August 4th. Yield was not affected by N rate under dryland conditions, but N increased grain protein, and topdressing increased grain protein at low rates of preplant N.
