Planting
Patterns of Three Safflower Cultivars in Southern Iran

Abstract
Three autumn safflower (Carrthamus tinctorius L.) cultivars were planted as
single row (6010 cm) and double row (6020 cm) at Kushkak Agric. Exp. Sta.,
Shiraz Univ., Iran in 1998. The experiment was conducted as factional (32) in
randomized complete block design with 3 replications.
The fertilizers, herbicides and irrigation were applied to all
treatments as usual. The results showed that double row planting had
higher seeds per head and seed yields.LRV 51/11 cultivar had higher yield than
LRV51/51 and Zarghan 279 cultivars mainly due to higher heads plant-1 and seeds
head-1. Both plant height and growth period were significantly higher in
LRV/51/11 and Zarghan 279 for double row planting with no significant effect on
LRV/51/51 cultivar. Thus it is recommonded that safflower can be efficiently
planted as double row, particularly in saline regions.
